Floodplains, estuaries, and riparian areas are critical habitats that support the health, growth, and survival of Pacific salmon and steelhead, migratory birds, invertebrates, and shellfish. These highly valuable areas also benefit people: from supporting the lives and cultural practices of Tribal nations since time immemorial to providing some of the most fertile agricultural lands in the region to providing outdoor recreation spaces.

Success looks like increasing functional floodplain, estuary, and riparian habitat across the Puget Sound region by improving regulatory frameworks, increasing incentives, accelerating habitat restoration projects, and advancing integrated floodplain management across the Puget Sound ecosystem.

What do we measure?

  • We evaluate success by measuring restoration and acquisition activities in floodplains, estuaries, and riparian areas.
  • We evaluate the “Indicator Progress” by reviewing most recent data for a metric and assessing change relative to a point back in time. This reference point varies across Progress Indicators.
  • We assess the “Indicator Status” for Progress Indicators that have an associated target. We look at the recent data for a metric and determine whether the metric has met its target.
  • Progress Indicators are complicated. Click on each Progress Indicator in the table below to learn more.

Key Results

  • [Fake] The rate of restoration is increasing in floodplain habitats but declining in riparian areas. Etc. Etc.

What factors and actors affect these Progress Indicators?

  • Improving capacity of local organizations. Etc. etc. etc.
  • Mobilizing local, state, and federal funding for habitat restoration and protection. Etc. etc. etc.
  • Addressing common barriers to implementing restoration projects. Etc. etc. etc.

What other actions can we take?

  • X, y, and z.

Ultimately, we need to continuously protect and restore floodplains, estuaries, and riparian areas in Puget Sound. We need to realize integrated floodplain management and promote river-basin planning to benefit fish habitat, natural resource economies, and flood risk reduction.
